SUMMER
READING ASSIGNMENT
Choose three books
from the reading list. Please do not
select a title that you have previously read. Read only one
book from a particular author. This will help you experience a
variety of works from a variety of authors.
You must complete one
of the projects below for each of the books you choose to
read. Please be creative with your projects. Your grade
will be based on writing skills, grammar, neatness, and creativity.
1. BOOK REPORT
Prepare a
typed book report that includes setting, characters, a summary of
the story, and your opinion of the book. Would you recommend
it to a friend? Why or why not?
Your report should also include a
title page formatted as follows: (1) name of book and author
centered, and (2) student's name, date, and grade in lower
right-hand corner.
The first paragraph should give
factual information about the book. Name the book and the
author. Identify the setting and introduce the main
characters. The second paragraph should begin a detailed
summary of the story. The next paragraph should express your
opinion of the book. The last paragraph should be your
recommendation of the book. Would you recommend it to a
friend? Why or why not?
Your book report should be typed if
possible. If typed, it should be double-spaced. Your
book report can be hand written, but be sure your writing is neat
and legible.
2. ACTION!
ACTION!
Pretend you are the author of one of
the books you read, and it has just become a best seller!
Write a letter (using appropriate format) to a movie producer
explaining why the plot and characters would make a terrific
movie. Suggest a filming location that would be a good setting
for the story and choose actors that you think would really bring
the main characters to life on screen. Then create a movie
poster for your book. (Do not choose a book for this project
that has already been made into a movie.)
3.
CHARACTER SKETCH
Choose a main character from one of
your books. Write a brief summary of the book and then focus
on one character. Write about the character's personality,
traits, flaws, and whether or not you liked the character. Be
sure to explain why you felt the way you did about the
character. Be specific and use examples from the text to
support your opinion. Include a drawing of what you think the
character should look like. Your drawing should be hand done.
