Summer Reading Assignments for Children Entering 6th Grade

SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT
You are to choose three books, which you have never read, from the reading list.  You will be required to complete a separate assignment for each book chosen.

These will include:

  • Written Report

  • Quilt Square

  • Newspaper

The specific instructions for each are found below.


1.  WRITTEN REPORT
Be sure to include all of the following information information when writing your report:

  1. Title and Author

  2. Setting and Characters

  3. Main events in the story - a brief summary, 8-10 sentences

  4. Whether you liked or disliked the story - giving specific reasons/examples to support your point of view.

  5. Tell on thing that you would change about the story and why.

  6. Conclusion - would you recommend this book to a friend or classmate?  Again, be specific in supporting your point of view.

  7. Report may be handwritten, in script, or typed.  Cover may be hand done or computer generated.


2.  QUILT SQUARE
Be sure to follow these instructions when completing your quilt square.

  1. Use the paper given out to complete the quilt square.

  2. Draw your favorite scene from the book.

  3. Be sure to include the title and author.

  4. Write a creative description of the story.

  5. Decorate the edge of the paper with a design related to your book.

  6. All quilt squares must be done horizontally.

  7. All squares must be hand done and colored.

  8. Be creative, neat, and have fun!


3.  NEWSPAPER

  1. Design the front page of a newspaper that might be found in the town where your story takes place.

  2. Name your newspaper.

  3. Include one article about the characters or events in your book on the cover of your newspaper.

  4. Include at least one illustrated scene from your story.

  5. Make your newspaper look as much like a real newspaper as possible.

  6. Include additional information or ads that would be appropriate for the time period in which your story takes place.

  7. The computer may be used for this assignment.

  8. The more detail, the better the newspaper.


DUE DATES

  • The quilt squares will be due Friday, Sept. 5th.

  • The other two reports are due on Monday, Sept. 8th.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy reading your books!!  I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the reports in September.  I know they will be fabulous!!  Enjoy the summer; I'm excited to see all of you in the sixth grade.  I can't wait!  I know we're going to have a fantastic year together!!!!
