READING ASSIGNMENT
You are to do two book reports over the summer.
Choose from
the reading list.
Both reports are due the
Friday, Sept. 5th.
Your child also has a Summer
Math Assignment. Click
here to read the Summer Math Assignment.
BOOK
REPORT #1 - WRITTEN REPORT
Due the Friday, Sept. 5th
You are to hand write a book
report in cursive or print. It must be written in complete, correctly written
sentences. Spelling and neatness will count toward your
overall grade.
Paragraph
1
State the following:
-
Title
-
Author
-
Illustrator (if any)
-
Setting
The setting is
where the story takes place. Is it a real place or an
imaginary one? If the author does not tell you exactly where
the story is set, what can you tell from the way it is described?
Setting also includes
the time period. Is the story set in the present day or in an
earlier time period? Is it set in the future? Let the
reader of your report know.
Paragraph
2
Tell about the main character(s) of the story. You do not have
to list every character in the book. Who is the story mostly
about? Often, one (or two) character(s) can be singled
out. Give a brief description.
Next
2 - 3 Paragraphs
Write a summary of the plot. A summary is a brief retelling of
the story in your own words. What happens to the main
character? Do not report every single thing that happens in
the story. Pick only the most important events.
Last
Paragraph
Write whether or not you liked the book. Give a reason or
reasons. Be specific. Do not just say: It was
funny. It was sad. It was interesting. Tell about
what you read in the book that made it funny, sad, or
interesting. Be honest. If you really didn't like the
book, say so, but give reasons why you did not like it.
Cover
Design
In addition to the report, you are to design a hand-drawn
cover. Do not copy the book cover. You must give the
title, author, and illustrator (if any). Draw an
illustration. Your name is to go in the lower right-hand
corner.
When doing your cover,
remember it is the first thing the reader will see, and you should
try to make a good first impression. Make it
"eye-catching". Use bold colors so the lettering
stands out. Avoid yellow when writing since it does not show
up well. Hold your cover up a few feet from mom or dad and see
if she/he can read the title and make out the illustration. If
the answer is yes, you're good. If the answer is no, you might
want to redo it. Remember neatness counts.
If you use markers on
construction paper, be careful. They tend to smear. you
may have better success with colored pencils or sharp crayons.
BOOK
REPORT #2 - Sandwich
Due the Friday, Sept 5th
This report is to be done in either dark pencil or erasable
pen. Be careful not to do a lot of erasing because it will
make your report messy and detract from its appearance.
On the cover (slice of
bread), print the title and author of the book. Draw and color
a picture that goes with your book. On each part of the
sandwich there are instructions telling you what to write. use
complete sentences and correct spelling. Be careful when
writing that you stay on the lines so that you don't accidentally
cut off words. DO NOT TURN THE PAPER OVER; KEEP YOUR REPORT
SHORT. When you are finished writing, you are to lightly color
the sandwich part. make sure that what you have written can be
read. Use crayons or color pencils, no markets, and don't
press too hard.) Then carefully cut it out.
The sandwich is to be
assembled as follows:
-
Bread (Cover)
-
Tomato (Main
Character)
-
Lettuce (Setting)
-
Lunchmeat (Book
Summary)
-
Cheese (Favorite
Part)
-
Dressing
(mustard/mayonnaise, Russian dressing, etc.) (What you thought
of Book)
-
Bread (back cover -
This is where your first and last name goes. Please put it
in the lower right-hand corner.)
Attach the parts with a
paper fastener at the top (indicated by a black dot on each
section).
