Summer Reading
Assignments for Children Entering 2nd Grade |
 |
Welcome to summer! I'm
sure you have many exciting plans and many of those will take you to
far off places. Hopefully your child will appreciate all your
efforts towards these adventures. I would like you to
encourage your child to travel the world and try new and exciting
things without even leaving the house. How? I would like
you to encourage your child to turn off the T.V., computer, video
games and the likes. Have your child open a book
instead. Pick a book that you enjoyed as a child and read it
to him/her. Go to the library and find books that are of
interest to your child. Make reading fun not a punishment.
SUMMER
READING ASSIGNMENT
- Two Book Reports
- Two Book Worms
The children do have a summer reading assignment for second
grade. I would like the children to become "book
worms" and devour books.
BOOK REPORT
Starting with their summer
reading assignment the children will read 2 books from the reading
list and complete a book report for each. You are not
limited to this list. The children are required to do a book report for each book.
Two copies of the book report were sent out. You can also download the book report below - it is
saved as a Word document.

BOOK WORM
In addition to
the report the children will complete a section of our "book
worm" for each book. Each month the
children will complete this same assignment and our book worm will
get longer and longer. When you come and visit our classroom
you too will see all the books that the class has devoured. Instructions
are written below.
Book Worm
Instructions:
- Cut out a 6 inch circle from any
color poster board.
- On one side: write the title
of the book, the author's name and draw a picture representing
the story.
- On the other side: write a
brief summary of your favorite part of the story and your name.
- ALL summer reports
are due by Thurs. Sept. 4, 2008.
The children will follow this same
format for their monthly book reports. The monthly book
reports will always be due on the last day of the month in
which we are in school. All reports are graded. New book
report forms will be issued at the start of each month with the due
date listed as the bottom of the form..
DUE DATE
The 2 book reports and 2 sections of the "Book Worm" are
due by Thursday, September 4, 2008
PIZZA HUT
BOOK IT PROGRAM
Pizza Hut offers an additional incentive for reading with the
"Book It" program. Children reading one extra book
and completing all reports and circles will receive a certificate
for a free "Personal Pan Pizza." This program runs
from October to March.
READING LIST

to this list. If you have an exceptional reader or a
struggling reader, please use your discretion as to the books for
your child.
